Have you ever opened a loaf of bread and noticed the small plastic clip holding the bag closed?
Most people remove it without giving it a second thought.
But according to a long-standing bakery practice, that tiny clip may actually contain useful information about the bread you’re buying.
The surprising part is that many shoppers go their entire lives without realizing what the different colors can mean.
What Are Bread Clips?
Bread clips, sometimes called bread tags or bread tabs, are the small plastic pieces used to seal bags of bread and baked goods.
Their primary purpose is simple: keeping the bag closed and helping the bread stay fresh longer.
However, many bakeries have also used them as a quick way to identify when a loaf was packaged.
The Color Code Many Bakeries Use
In some bakeries and grocery stores, different colored clips are assigned to different days of the week.
While the system isn’t universal and can vary by bakery, a common version looks something like this:
- Blue = Monday
- Green = Tuesday
- Red = Thursday
- White = Friday
- Yellow = Saturday
The purpose is to help store employees quickly identify older inventory and rotate stock efficiently.
